File Extension widget is also used to open small applications associated with Yahoo! Widgets, which was formerly called Konfabulator until acquired by Yahoo on July 25, 2005. Applications included calendars, clocks, maps, mail checker, and others. Konfabulator is equipped with a reliable Application Programming Interface (API) created in JavaScript. There are almost 4000 small programs available with this extension and is gaining popularity among internet users because of its usefulness and dynamism.

As applications running on this extension are prone to spyware, some security concerns have been raised about file extension widget. Just like any other program code, widget can as well be used for malevolent purposes such as tricking unsuspecting users install inappropriate adware. An indication would be the disappearance of the Widgets icon from the system tray. However, Widget itself is not a virus neither is it a Trojan or malware and one does not need to worry much when deciding to install it in on their computer.
